Android is getting smarter about spotting battery-hungry apps

Credit: Edgar Cervantes / Android Authority Google has introduced a new metric in the Play Console beta to detect excessive background wake locks.  The tool helps developers identify and fix app behaviors that drain batteries without the user’s knowledge. It’s part of Google’s longer-term plan to improve Android app performance consistency across devices. If your phone‘s battery has ever mysteriously plummeted overnight or died halfway through the day for no apparent reason, the culprit might be a misbehaving app in the background. Now, Google says it’s rolling out new tools that could help fix that problem, starting with a metric aimed at spotting one of the most common sources of battery drain. As part of a new beta release, Android developers will now be able to track “excessive wake locks” using the Android Vitals dashboard in the Play Console. Wake locks are system-level functions that keep your phone awake even when it’s supposed to be idle. Some apps use them for legitimate reasons, like playing music or tracking location, but when used incorrectly, especially in the background, they can seriously hurt battery life.

This new projector has Netflix, FHD output, and is priced in impulse-buy territory

Dangbei’s latest projector features a built-in gimbal stand for versatile positioning. The 1080p projector offers auto-keystoning, auto-focus, and object avoidance. Dangbei is taking $50 off the price right now, selling the N2 mini for just $179. Everybody loves watching content on a big screen — something about that cinema experience just really elevates things, to say nothing of making it that much easier to enjoy with a group. And while you can buy some positively gigantic televisions these days, between high prices and tricky installation, they might not be your first choice. If you’re looking to both save money and add a lot of flexibility to your viewing solution, a digital projector could be just what the doctor ordered, and today we’re hearing about a new option from Dangbei with a price that’s hard to ignore. Dangbei’s N2 mini has a few important things going for it, especially at this price point. It offers a full 1080p resolution, so you won’t be stuck watching all your favorite YouTube channels at 720p. And it’s actually got built-in Netflix, which is far from a given with projectors, and its absence can sometimes involve some annoying, hacky workarounds.
